Private vs. Public Sector: Working Conditions
I used to think that working conditions in the public sector were the panacea for teachers – that is until I actually worked there. Just sitting at my desk at the beginning of school in September when the principal comes into our staff room, approaches my history teacher colleague and simply informs her that according to the collective agreement, he had the right to impose an additional four periods a cycle on her, adding it to her schedule just like that.
The fact that he did not end up doing it is irrelevant. The fact that he was within his rights to take this action simply boggles the mind. No similar allowance for the employer exists within the realm of the Jewish People’s’ School Peretz School (JPPS) collective agreements. In the latter case, too many periods means the hiring of additional staff rather than the apportioning of these periods amongst existing staff.
